The Radio Dept. recorded one of this year’s best pop albums (called ‘Clinging to a Scheme’) but instead of having some relax and free time after their worldwide success they decided to start an US tour and release new single EP for stunning ‘Never Follow Suit.’ The leading song is partly inspired by 80’s documentary ‘Style Wars’ about the Graffiti scene, hip hop in New York and with these phenomenons related imminent cult of independence and God-like posers. Music of Swedish pop band The Radio Dept. is hard to categorize exactly and with arrival of surprising prominence they faced some kind of effort to pigeonhole them somewhere and make them “next big thing” - thing that indie groups don’t like and implicitly are in opposition to.
As their ‘Never Follow Suit EP’ is being released in a week, Swedish shoegaze-poppers decided to put its first song, ‘The One’ for free download (listen to it below). It begins with unusually minimalistic beats, repetitive bass and sharp percussion, all wrapped in dark atmosphere. As the main melody comes played by mouth-organ, the song becomes lighter and careless and as vocals come it’s typical the Radio Dept.’s lushed harmony. The song sounds as some kind of prequel to ‘Never Follow Suit’ and as it ends, it naturally proceeds into the second one. ‘The One’ is true to its leading lyrics and it carries on, carries on with its loose, blissful mood. The mood we love this Swedish trio for.
